Award winners!

The surgery is pleased to announce we won two awards at the annual Special Thanks and Recognition (STAR) awards ceremony, which was held at Middleton Masonic Hall.on Thursday 29th June 2017.

Now in their fourth year, the STAR awards celebrate and recognise GP Practice staff, GPs and CCG staff for the excellent work carried out to achieve the CCG’s vision of ‘Healthier people, better future’.

Our very own Dr Danielle Peet won the the Shining STAR award. One of the many members of our staff who were nominated, Dr Peet won the award for being 'a dynamic and forward thinking GP, who gives 100% to the patients and practice team'. As the presenting also parties stated - and as we are all already aware - Dr Peet is "special, one of a kind and is loved by the patients and staff". Well done Dr Peet!!

The practice also won the Sustainable STAR award for our gardening project, so many thanks again to all those who have contributed; the award is as much yours as it the practice's. Look out for news about upcoming gardening dates as we continue to nurture and grow it!

Practice Nurse Appointments

Drs Stockton and Thompson would like to take this opportunity to to apologise for any of our patients that have had their Practice Nurse appointment cancelled. Our Practice Nurse has recently been in hospital. We have now sourced a new Health Care Assistant who will be covering some of Colette's duties, including blood tests, and we also welcome back Gemma. Unfortunately it is difficult to source someone who can replace Colette's full skill set - for example smears and spirometry - on a short-term basis; as documented in the press, there is a shortage of Practice Nurses nationally. Again, we apologise for any cancellations and would like to thank you for being understanding. We all wish Colette a speedy recovery.

New Opening Time for Phone Lines

Dr. Stockton and Dr. Thompson are aware that due to the practice doors being open from 8am in the morning then once the telephone lines open at 8:30am some urgent on-the-day appointments have already been taken. To make this fair for all our patients we are now opening both the telephone lines and doors at 8am from Monday 5th June 2017.

As heavily documented in the media, NHS services are stretched and we are now being required by the Heywood..., Middleton and Rochdale Clinical Care Commission Services to triage urgent on-the-day appointments to enable signposting of other more suitable treatment pathways, such as Pharmacies, Opticians and Dental services

So just to confirm, from Monday 5th June 2017 both the surgery and the phone lines will be opening from 8.00 a.m. Monday to Friday. The phone lines will be open until 6.30 p.m. every week day and the surgery doors will be continue to be open until 6.30 p.m. each weekday, barring Tuesday and Wednesdays when we are open until 7.00 p.m.

Surgery Garden

Many thanks to all those patients; their families; and our staff members who braved the inclement weather on Saturday to help us start on phase one of creating our new community garden outside the surgery - we hope you are pleased with the results so far! Also, many thanks to those who provided plants, seeds, pots, tools etc - and also to the kindly council workers who were on hand to remove some of our green waste!

There will be further opportunities to help out if you wish... to get or stay involved going forward - please keep an eye out for the announcement of future meeting dates as the garden continues to grow (in more ways than one!)

Royal Voluntary Service Home Visit Scheme

Ever been told you talk too much? A nationwide study conducted found that 68 percent of adults in the UK say they feel lonely either often, always or sometimes. Could you be part of making sure that people in your community connect? Could you spare an hour a week/fortnight or a month to spend time with a local person to help them feel less isolated? Or, if talking's not for you, could you be a volunteer driver? It couldn't be easier to volunteer if you are interested. Please reply RVS if you are interested. Free training will be provided by the Royal Voluntary Service in conjunction with the surgery and we will put you in contact with them.

Many thanks,

Interested in gardening?

We are planning to improve the space outside and around the surgery, starting off by planting a community garden. If this gets your green fingers tingling then please let us know. We are looking for any donations of plants, compost, planters and equipment – and of course any time you can spare helping out!

Tidying will commence on Saturday 1st April (just to assure you this is not an April Fool’s scam!). All are welcome and refreshments will be provided. Please let reception know if you intend to come so we can plan numbers.

Also, we are running a competition (closing date 31st March) amongst our younger patients (children up the age of 12) to pick a name for the garden - entry forms are available from behind reception!

Best wishes,

The Surgery Team

Tesco Extra in Middleton have organised a community scheme for volunteers to go out and provide food and toiletries to the people who are homeless in Manchester city centre. If this is something you would be interested in volunteering for yourself, the next event has been organised for Monday 13th of March 2017, meeting at 13.30 p.m. at the Tesco Extra in Middleton. Alternatively, you might wish to donate some toiletries yourself - essentials such as deodarent, soap, toothpaste etc. Please contact the surgery if you'd like any further details.

Last call for Flu Jabs!!!

A Happy New Year to all patients and stakeholders, we hope you have a great (and healthy!) 2017. To get the year off on a good foot, make sure you don't miss out on your flu jab as the window for having these done will soon be closing

f you fall into the following categories, you will qualify for a free flu jab (or nasal spray for any entitled children, unless they are able to have one at school):

Any patient over the age of 65; all patients who are pregnant; all patients who are unpaid carers (i.e. for a friend or relative); all 2-, 3- and 4-year old children under school age (children in school years 1, 2 and 3 will get theirs at school) and anyone who has a long-standing medical condition and is at risk from flu.

If you are unsure if you qualify for a free jab, please contact the surgery for advice; you can still always pay (£10 per patient) to have one done privately at the surgery if you don’t qualify for a free jab but would still like one done.

Anyhow, please book now to avoid disappointment! PLEASE NOTE: If you already have an upcoming appointment at the surgery, you don’t need to book a separate appointment for your flu vaccination - we can give you your jab there and then!

In the meantime, please contact the surgery if you’ve any concerns or queries re any of the above.

Many thanks,

November 2016

Well done to the following members of our Surgery Team: Dr Thompson; Vicky; Leanne; Lorelle; and Louise, who completed the Movember 2016 5K run at Heaton Park on Sunday the 20th Of November. Movember is a charity which promotes health awareness for men, and the surgery donated £100 towards this valuable cause. Our intrepid runners braved the cold and wet to complete the run - great job girls! :-)

We are sad to announce the departure of Dr Tattersall from the surgery. Dr Tattersall has now moved to a surgery nearer to home so that she can be closer to her family and we would like to take the opportunity to thank her for her valued work whilst working at the surgery and wish her all the very best for the future.

On a more positive note, we hope you will be as pleased as we are to announce the arrival of Dr Tattersall’s replacement Dr Lucy France. Before she fully starts, however, we will have some familiar locum doctors providing cover. We would please appreciate your usual patience and understanding during this transition period.

Best wishes,

Congratulations to our HCA Nurse and Support Team worker, Gemma, who gave birth to a beautiful baby girl last week - with three sons to contend with, this is no doubt a welcome bit of back up for Gemma! Anyhow, I am pleased to report that mother and baby are both doing well and we are all looking forward to meeting her newest family member.

Congratulations also to Vicky, our Practice Manager, who recently became one Mrs Buckland-Fellows! We wish Vicky and her husband James all the very best for a long and happy future together.

Dr Stockton; Dr Thompson; and Finance Manager, Pete Thompson, took part in a 3 mile sponsored walk through Rhodes Woods yesterday in aid of Heartline Club, Middleton, along with club members and their families. This fantastic charity offers support to those who've suffered with heart disease in the past. Members meet twice a week (Wednesdays and Friday, 10 am to 12 noon) at Middleton arena, and for just £2 a time can benefit from a fantastic range of activities, facilties and support, plus - as we found out - great company! For details about how to become involved, please contact the surgery or call the club direct on 0161 728 5060 or 0161 643 2942. Pictured (courtesy of Dr Thompson) are Val Screeton (Ladies Rep for the club and a patient at the surgery); Dr Stockton (and children!); and Pete.

Surgery Victim of Arson Attack

As you may already be aware, regrettably there has been a fire at the surgery, which the police have now confirmed was as a result of criminal activity. We wish to assure you that will still be open for "business"; however, one of our clinical rooms is currently completely out of commission due to the damage sustained and, unfortunately, we cannot presently put a timescale on when this will be back available for use once again.

Inevitably, this will lead to us having to reschedule some appointments, where completely unavoidable, but we will do everything within our powers to minimise the disruption to our service and to avoid inconveniencing you any more than is absolutely necessary.

In the meantime, we thank you all for your patience and understanding as always.

Kind regards,

Winners! - Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale Innovation Star Award 2014!

We are delighted to announce that the practice was awarded the Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale Clinical Commissioning Group Innovation Star Award 2014 for our system alerts project.  The practice was also shortlisted for the same award for our text messaging service for patients and also a personal star award for our female GP, Dr Danielle Peet.

The award was given for the development  and implementation of a new alerting system which has enabled the practice to increase its uptake in all areas of enhanced service activity such as flu vaccinations, chlamydia screening, weight and diet advice and the flu vaccination programme.  It has also meant that patients do not have to visit the practice as frequently for clinical reviews as these are prompted and carried out opportunistically by the alerts system when patients attend for other health complaints.

We are very proud to have been awarded for our achievements and would like to pass on our sincere thanks to all those patients who nominated us.

June 2014

Are You A Carer Or Do You Have A Carer?

A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.  Anyone can become a carer; carers come from all walks of life, all cultures and can be of any age.

The practice is trying to increase its register of carers as their are many benefits which carers can receive such as paid breaks, free flu vaccinations and access to information to help and support you.

If you are a carer or you have a carer then please let the practice know so that this can be documented on your records.

May 2014

100% Achievement On The National Quality Outcome Framework Yet Again!

The practice is delighted to announce that we have achieved 100% yet again in the national GP contract which targets GP practices on specific disease areas to ensure that we are managing your health in line with current guidance.

The Quality Outcomes Framework (or QOF as we like to call it!) presents us with new challenges every year in terms of specific targets which we need to achieve based on our patient's health.  Examples include targets such as numbers of our diabetic patients who have received a blood pressure check, numbers of our asthma patients with specific annual testing and targets around various blood levels all aimed at improving the health of our patients.

Year on year the targets become harder with less and less funding attached to them which is always a challenge and is difficult to manage along with our day to day service to you for your acute health issues.  However, we are glad to see that the hard work of our team is paying off.

The new targets for this year have already been announced and we are therefore now working hard on these targets to try and achieve the same result next year!

You Talked And We Listened!

As part of our continual strive to try and improve the service we provide to our patients, despite increased demand and decreased funding, we are pleased to announce that our patient participation group questionnaire report is now available to view and download online.

In February our patient participation group distributed a questionnaire, the questions of which were aimed at things which our patient participation group thought to be of importance to patients.  The questionnaire was distributed within the surgery, via email link and on our website as a popup window.

As usual we received a good response and some interesting comments and suggestions were put forward by you our patients.  The responses and ideas were taken back to our patient participation group and a report has been created which shows what action the practice is taking with regards to putting some of the suggestions in place.

You can view and download the report plus various documents used to compile it by  clicking here .

Once again, the practice and the patient participation group would like to thank you for your feedback which is always valuable.

The Extraction Of Data By The Health & Social Care Information Centre

The confidentiality and security of your medical information has and always will be one of our main priorities.  Patients have the right for their clinical information to be held securely and viewed only by staff authorised to do so.

The Health & Social Care Information Centre has written to all practices asking for us to make patients aware about the improvement and modernisation of the NHS in terms of data usage.  Patient information is already used extensively by the NHS and can be used to improve the services offered so that the NHS can provide the best possible care for everyone.

The information along with your postcode and NHS number but not your name, are sent to a secure system where it can be linked with other health information.  This allows those planning NHS services or carrying out medical research to use information from different parts of the NHS in a way which does not identify you.

You have a choice.  If you are happy for your information to be used in this way you do not have to do anything.  If you have any concerns or wish to prevent this from happening, please contact the practice at drstocktonandthompson@nhs.net

More information can be found at www.nhs.uk/caredata

Has Your Child Received Their Full Course Of MMR Vaccination?

You may be aware that there has been an increase in the number of measles cases in England with some local outbreaks.

Measles usually causes runny nose, red eyes, cough, high temperature and a rash.  It can also cause complications including ear infections, diarrhoea, pneumonia and convulsions.  It is more likely to be serious in pregnant women, people whose immunity is not working properly and babies under a year of age.  Very serious complications, such as inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) are rare, but can be fatal.

If your child is aged between 10 and 16 years and they have not received 2 MMR vaccinations then they may not be fully immunised.  Please contact the surgery to make them an appointment with our practice nurse.  If you do not want your child to receive the MMR vaccination, then please contact the surgery to advise us in which we will need you to complete a short form.

A New Clinical System To Improve Services Further For Our Patients!

In an attempt to improve efficiency of maintaining your records, the practice will be moving to a new system called EMIS Web this month.  This system will improve efficiency and hopefully give us more time to develop and improve our services further.  This is a huge change for all of our staff, some of which have been using our old system for well over 10 years.

The practice holds a secure and encrypted database which houses around 32,000 patient records, with 3600 of them for our current registered patients.  This is a huge database and as with any GP practice we are heavily reliant on it.

As with any system change there may be some disruption to our service and we ask that you bear with us whilst we find our feet!

See Us In The Middleton Guardian!  "Surgery's Pioneering Software Helping To Diagnose Dementia"

We were extremely proud to be featured in the 28th February 2013 edition of the Middleton Guardian concerning our recent trial of an iPad application to help spot early signs of dementia.

The test, which has been developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge, assesses patients' short-term memory with a number of challenges where they are asked to remember shapes and symbols.

The practice received a support grant to use the application to try and increase screening in the borough.  It can be argued that earlier detection of dementia can help to ease the suffering of patients and save costs associated with the the treatment in the future.  It can also help to prevent unnecessary referrals to secondary care which can cause worry and inconvenience for patients.

We view this as a valuable service and a step in the right direction for IT integration into primary care and one which provides the practice with a niche for our patients.

If you would like to have a try of the app then please ask at reception.

For more information on the app and how it works  click here .

Help Us To Help You Get An Appointment When You Need One!  Always Cancel Your Appointments So That Patients On Our Cancellation List Can Have Them!

The practice is facing an ever increasing amount of missed appointments on a daily basis.  This is affecting our ability to offer patients an appointment at a day and time convenient to themselves and we would therefore ask that should you not require or cannot make your appointment, that you cancel it.

The practice has a number of reserved appointments for urgent on the day cases and once these have been used we have a cancellation list which is unlike other practices as we will ring you if a cancellation occurs rather than you ringing us.  However, we can only ring you if other patients cancel their appointments so please help us to make this service as efficient as possible.

Missed appointments are currently costing your practice around £1000 per month.  If we saved this money we could increase our GP appointment capacity by 70 appointments per month, again making it easier to obtain an appointment when you require.

Just a reminder that you can text us to cancel your appointment by sending the word 'cancel' with your name and date of birth to  07780793149.

As you may have heard on the news there has been a recent rise in reported cases of whooping cough in the UK.

Following the deaths of 9 babies in England and as all the babies were below the age of their first set of immunisations, the Department Of Health has decided that women in the later stages of pregnancy should be offered the whooping cough vaccination.

The aim of this vaccination is to protect the baby in the first few weeks of life.  If you are between 28 and 38 weeks pregnant then please contact the surgery and make an appointment with the nurse to have a whooping cough booster or for further information please contact the surgery.

The following tests are included:
